Vortrag in Englisch
As the video game revolution took off, so did academic interest in games & play. Since the turn of the millennium several European universities have started game related educational and r&d programs. In some cases this has led to the emergence of a local innovative game design & development ecosphere in which local academia, cultural institutions, creative industries, other sectors (such as marketing & communication, ICT, Healthcare) governments and players interact, innovate and create ‘value’. The recent trends in the game industry (online production, online distribution and the rise of mobile-, casual-, and serious games) have had a positive impact on the establishment of these ecospheres.
In 2002 Jeroen van Mastrigt established Europe’s first full time bachelor and master programs in game design (in the Netherlands). At that time there where hardly any game companies in the Netherlands. This has changed. At the moment over 150 Dutch game companies exist emplyoing over 3000 people. Numerous Dutch game festivals, game conferences, educational and r&d programs and government initiatives have emerged. One of these initiatives is the Dutch Game Garden. An Utrecht based incubator program facilitating the Duth game ecosphere, linking academia with industry, and helping new startups to grow.
Drawing on his vast experience in both academia and industry Jeroen will sketch the emergence of Dutch game education and the Dutch Game ecosphere. Based on this case he will then analyse the European context. He will share his insight in the future of the European game industries and the important role of education and R&D in the codevelopment of European value creating ecospheres in the field of game design & development.
